Mathematics Presentation at The Heights School by Maris Ozols

The Heights Year 8 Ignite class recently experienced a presentation by Dr Maris Ozols, a computer research scientist with DSTO. Maris gave an interesting review of his involvement in Mathematics and described how important Mathematics is in the research of various computer applications, including ‘critical computing’.
He then investigated continued fractions, guiding students through improved estimations of p and concluded with connections to the Golden ratio, Fibonacci sequence and transcendental numbers.
As he described his love of Mathematics, Maris offered students much advice, including the thought that to improve your success in Mathematics, no matter how complex it may sometimes appear, you need to believe that you CAN understand it and that you EXPECT to solve the problem.
